FULL REVIEW
What are the odds, on the same month that all of the most high profile games are being released the chaps at Razer send us the spankin’ new Razer Electra gaming headphones for review. So we got down and boogied with these cans on the likes of Battlefield 3 as well as the symphonies of the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Let’s find out if Razer does Audio as well as it does gaming peripherals.
Build+Style
The Razer Electra, much like its name, is catchy and a very charged looking pair of headphones. Even boxed, the sleek design with attractive matte black with contrasting highlights of green just seem to catch your eye. As a rule of thumb, florescent colours do not make the product. Especially since the use of florescent paint is only restricted to the print world, and has not graced the product world much, except for the sports sector. However, the Electra pulls the green off with panache even within those confines of the plastic box it beckons you with.
Once unboxed, the Electra feels so smooth thanks to the fact that 70% of it is clad in soft ultra-comfortable leatherette cushioning. The cups are also thick with a green highlighted perforated fibre covering the speaker cones. The plastic bits look solidly built, which is very reassuring and welcome in this world where cheap plastics. The Electra feels rock steady in your hands, ready to withstand a lot of wear and tear. Despite the size, it is very light in your hands and on your head.
The 1.3 meter wire is thick rubber coated and clad in green and connects to the base of one of the cups with 3.5mm jacks. You can swap this out with an in line microphone all in green. People with rigs that a positioned a bit far away might need to look at investing in an extender cable as the cable provided is not too long. Especially since most rig audio connectors are in the rear.
The plush leatherette feels great on your skin and the headphones fits snug on your head. Without too much of a clamp, as in it does not press hard into your skull, like most headphones do. The great part is, at no point in time does the material ever heat your ears, like most headgear tends to do. Razer did not intend this pair of headphones to be only confined to your den for long hours of multiplayer. The Electra looks stylish enough to flaunt on the go, while listening to your fav tunes on the metro. That is if you don’t get robbed of it first. When you want to put it away, you can neatly fold the cups inwards so that the upper bridge acts as a protector for the valuable tech within the cups. Razer has thought of everything.
Sound Quality - Music
She might have the looks, definitely, but does she have the moves. The 55mm inner ear cup diameter encompasses your ear in a circum-aural nest. So it not only acts as a focus, but also it shuts out ambient sound without employing the use of noise cancellation tech. Thanks to Razer’s 40mm neodymium drivers, the music quality was excellent, the bass was pretty pumped up, especially on the peppy numbers and jazzy tracks. While Akon sounded spot on, good old jazz tracks had a very digital quality about it. It sounded great, but lacked a bit of those nice mids. However that’s a very small detail.
On the music front, the Electra delivers top notch sound and does not disappoint. You can also poke the inline mic into the slot and connect it to your iPhone for a better quality handsfree.
Sound Quality - Gaming
The Electra was tested on three brand new games. The first was the RPG juggernaut, Skyrim, with it’s sweeping orchestral score and fantastic open world with surround sound, and some really creative and gory monsters. The Electra was shining here, with the soundtrack piping through beautifully, from the epic highs to the flute and violin lows. On certain sequences you can actually hear the sounds of a forest all around you. In fact in some night eerie forest sequences, you could hear rustling, growls and whispers as the denizens of the night closed in on you. A fantastic aural experience.
Battlefield 3 was spot on, the superb sound engineering of the game shone through as the bass heavy music popped out. The mic came in handy communicating and since it was inline it was nice and unobtrusive. None of those embarassing times when headset mics have always stabbed into our nostrils during heavy firefights. The sound quality in surround was adequate, as the drivers simulated a 5.1 surround field.
The third game played was Saints Row: The Third, which generally has a lot of messy sounds, from loud pumpin’ basslines to lots of screeching of horns and guns firing. It was a bit annoying as everything was loud and in your face and those sounds started giving me a headache after some time. Though, it was not at all the fault of the Electra, just chalk this one up to lots of loudness.
Conclusion
The Electra wins hands down on every front. Providing excellent build quality, sound quality and gaming quality at a the price point of around Rs. 3,299, which is a decent price for quality, but it could have been a tad cheaper. Especially considering Sennheiser’s range of headphones. Yet, with the rising dollar prices, it’s all justified. For your buck though, what you get is a sweet looking piece of ear candy, so you can take it anywhere around with you, and the swappable mic makes it a way better hands free for your iPhone. Highly recommended.
